Taylor's death a grim reminder for us all

There's a reason I call them the Black KKK. The pain, the fear and the destruction are all the same.
Someone who loved Sean Taylor is crying right now. The life they knew has been destroyed, an 18-month-old baby lost her father, and, if you're a black man living in America, you've been reminded once again that your life is in constant jeopardy of violent death.

The Black KKK claimed another victim, a high-profile professional football player with a checkered past this time.

No, we don't know for certain the circumstances surrounding Taylor's death. I could very well be proven wrong for engaging in this sort of aggressive speculation. But it's no different than if you saw a fat man fall to the ground clutching his chest. You'd assume a heart attack, and you'd know, no matter the cause, the man needed to lose weight.

Well, when shots are fired and a black man hits the pavement, there's every statistical reason to believe another black man pulled the trigger. That's not some negative, unfair stereotype. It's a reality we've been living with, tolerating and rationalizing for far too long.

When the traditional, white KKK lynched, terrorized and intimidated black folks at a slower rate than its modern-day dark-skinned replacement, at least we had the good sense to be outraged and in no mood to contemplate rationalizations or be fooled by distractions.

Our new millennium strategy is to pray the Black KKK goes away or ignores us. How's that working?

About as well as the attempt to shift attention away from this uniquely African-American crisis by focusing on an alleged injustice the white media allegedly perpetrated against Sean Taylor.

Within hours of his death, there was a story circulating that members of the black press were complaining that news outlets were disrespecting Taylor's victimhood by reporting on his troubled past

No disrespect to Taylor, but he controlled the way he would be remembered by the way he lived. His immature, undisciplined behavior with his employer, his run-ins with law enforcement, which included allegedly threatening a man with a loaded gun, and the fact a vehicle he owned was once sprayed with bullets are all pertinent details when you've been murdered.

Marcellus Wiley, a former NFL player, made the radio circuit Wednesday, singing the tune that athletes are targets. That was his explanation for the murders of Taylor and Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams and the armed robberies of NBA players Antoine Walker and Eddy Curry.

Really?

Let's cut through the bull(manure) and deal with reality. Black men are targets of black men. Period. Go check the coroner's office and talk with a police detective. These bullets aren't checking W-2s.

Rather than whine about white folks' insensitivity or reserve a special place of sorrow for rich athletes, we'd be better served mustering the kind of outrage and courage it took in the 1950s and 1960s to stop the white KKK from hanging black men from trees.

But we don't want to deal with ourselves. We take great joy in prescribing medicine to cure the hate in other people's hearts. Meanwhile, our self-hatred, on full display for the world to see, remains untreated, undiagnosed and unrepentant.

Our self-hatred has been set to music and reinforced by a pervasive culture that promotes a crab-in-barrel mentality.

You're damn straight I blame hip hop for playing a role in the genocide of American black men. When your leading causes of death and dysfunction are murder, ignorance and incarceration, there's no reason to give a free pass to a culture that celebrates murder, ignorance and incarceration.

Of course there are other catalysts, but until we recapture the minds of black youth, convince them that it's not OK to "super man dat ho" and end any and every dispute by "cocking on your bitch," nothing will change.

Does a Soulja Boy want an education?

HBO did a fascinating documentary on Little Rock Central High School, the Arkansas school that required the National Guard so that nine black kids could attend in the 1950s. Fifty years later, the school is one of the nation's best in terms of funding and educational opportunities. It's 60 percent black and located in a poor black community.

Watch the documentary and ask yourself why nine poor kids in the '50s risked their lives to get a good education and a thousand poor black kids today ignore the opportunity that is served to them on a platter.

Blame drugs, blame Ronald Reagan, blame George Bush, blame it on the rain or whatever. There's only one group of people who can change the rotten, anti-education, pro-violence culture our kids have adopted. We have to do it.

According to reports, Sean Taylor had difficulty breaking free from the unsavory characters he associated with during his youth.

The "keepin' it real" mantra of hip hop is in direct defiance to evolution. There's always someone ready to tell you you're selling out if you move away from the immature and dangerous activities you used to do, you're selling out if you speak proper English, embrace education, dress like a grown man, do anything mainstream.

The Black KKK is enforcing the same crippling standards as its parent organization. It wants to keep black men in their place — uneducated, outside the mainstream and six feet deep.

In all likelihood, the Black Klan and its mentality buried Sean Taylor, and any black man or boy reading this could be next.

JACOBS: What I've experienced in the last 24 hours with the governor of Illinois, to me, is highly disappointing. We can disagree, we can have moments where we don't even like each other, but there should never be a time when the governor of Illinois threatens someone in a political and personal manner.
It's beneath the decorum of this building. I don't know if you've ever had the governor of Illinois lean on you in his beautiful room, and get me to the point where, you know, I thought we were going to come to blows. I'm sure that's happened many times in this building, but what's unusual in this situation is the length the governor has gone to, to get his way. Look, I want education, that's what I want. The governor wants healthcare. We need to find a compromise, try to meet in the middle. But I am not going to ever allow anybody in this building to run over me and to threaten me and to talk about spending every dime they've got and calling every labor union and tell them they're going to go after me, calling my university president and (mumbles) taking the $14 million we agreed on last year away from me because I won't vote for what he wants.
A governor of Illinois should have higher ethical standards, and a governor of Illinois shouldn't be in a position where he has to say 'Senator, you do what I say or else.' Because he or she should have the ability to work with people and to have relationships with people. I'm just very disappointed. I've been around this game a long time and I've never had anybody ever speak to me in that manner. And the real fight for me is education. The governor told me that he's going to run people against me. Well, I've got news for the governor of Illinois: This senator is going to run against Gov. Rod Blagojevich if the governor is still there because this state is highly mismanaged. We're going the wrong way, we need to prioritize, we need to have a better budget system, we need to have better and stronger leadership.
I was highly disappointed by what the governor did today, and I'm kind of ashamed to be a citizen of Illinois right now.
REPORTER: What do you mean by a personal threat?
JACOBS: Personal threat was that he would wreck my political career, that he would do everything in his power to generate every dollar; I was with him or I was against him. It was very direct. I don't know if anyone's been threatened by the governor of Illinois in his office, but it's kind of a scary thing. I'm just a person like everybody else. I put on my pants just like the governor does. And I'll be damned if I'm gonna let a governor, or anybody, tell me how it's gonna be and if it doesn't go his way, that there's going to be major retribution.
REPORTER: Did he say who he would run against you?
JACOBS: No, you know, Scott, at this point, I don't even care. To me, it's not about running someone against me. For me, it's about the tone, the threat, the implicit threat that my life was going to have some bad. When the governor of Illinois tells you you're going to have some bad, you start thinking they'll use state resources. And if you don't think the man will, be aware that he called my (Western Illinois) university president, Dr. Goldfarb, this afternoon and told him that they just lost their university, and thank you Mike Jacobs. He had (Deputy Gov.) Sheila Nix call. You know, I don't know what kind of game we're playing here, but this should be a hall of gentlemen and gentlewomen, people who may fight for what they want, but we darn well better treat each other with respect. And the governor of Illinois has lost all respect. And if the governor wants a fight, I'll give him a fight, because the people of Illinois are sick and tired of Rod Blagojevich mismanaging this state, Democrats and Republicans alike.
REPORTER: What did he offer you?
JACOBS: He offered me $75 million for Western University. I want the university.
REPORTER: And that was in exchange for a vote for ...?
JACOBS: For the healthcare proposal today, and if I didn't vote for it, I was losing it. I didn't even get out of his office before I got a call from President Goldfarb, you know, so I don't think he was teasing. Hey, look, you know, politics is tough. Sometimes they take things away when you don't do what they want. I get that. Sometimes you get things when you do the right thing. But this is beyond the pale. This is beyond the pale. You know, I'm not a crybaby, I'm not the kind of person who's a high-minded government person, you know, that everything should be just beautiful. But I've been around long enough to know when someone is shaking me down.
Note: A Western Illinois University spokesman later said he was unaware of any threat made to the school’s funding by the Blagojevich administration. A spokeswoman for the governor said it was Jacobs who was trying to get money for the school in exchange for his vote and the governor rejected the trade.
REPORTER: Do you know if anybody else has gotten similar pressure?
JACOBS: I understand they have, but I don't know if they've extended the same kind of treatment that I've been granted. If this governor would have been in East Moline, Illinois in one of my local taverns, I'd would have kicked his tail end. And that's the bottom line. As an adult I'd probably have to sue him, I suppose, but he'd probably love that. So, you know, I just want to make it clear, I want to send a strong message, we can dislike each other in this building, we can disagree with each other, but at the end of the day we should act like mature adults. And I'm going to go away and let the three children in charge of this place figure out what the rest of us ought to do, and if they refuse to run this building, then I'm going to start working very closely with my Republican colleagues across the aisle and Democrats across the aisle, and Democrats across Illinois to make Illinois a stronger place. Five years, three years, four years ago, we were the third largest state in America, now we're the fifth, soon to be the sixth. And if we don't start creating jobs and opportunity, you can give them all the free healthcare they want, but nobody is ever going to be able to collect on it.
REPORTER: Senator, what changed your mind to vote against the health care amendment in the first place?
JACOBS: Actually, the $1.5 billion tax increase. It's a lot of money for an experiment, for tinkering. Some people suggested 'Senator, you know you can throw the bill over to the House and let the House take care of this,' Well, you know, OK, but I want to stay focused on what I found offensive, and that was not the message, but the tactics. It was beneath the governor of Illinois to do.
REPORTER: Earlier this year you said you would support a gross receipts tax if the governor promised you $75 million for Western. What has changed?
JACOBS: Well first off we don't have a gross receipts tax, so the taxes are different. Look, there are things I will and won't do. And I will help the governor when I'm able to, but I'm not going to sell out my principles or the principles of my caucus and the people of Illinois because I'm afraid of the governor of Illinois. I'm not going to do it.
REPORTER: How was the meeting, did it start out bad?
JACOBS: The governor was calm at first, he was waiting for my arrival, he knew I was coming. I sat down, like a person on my feet, and I represent 220,000 voters, I got here the same way most people did, I won an election, I sat down across the table and said "Mr. Governor, I have high respect for you, I've always helped you, I've always tried my best not to say really mean things about you, but governor I cannot do this for you,' and he blew up like a 10-year-old child. And if it had been my son I might have put him over my knee and spanked him, but I really don't even believe in spanking.
REPORTER: Was there any profanity involved?
JACOBS: There was a lot of profanity involved.
REPORTER: Both sides?
JACOBS: Not on my side, I tried to do my best to remain as calm as I could, because I was intimidated. I was a little scared. I mean, hey look, you got people sitting in there, I don't know who these people are. There's security everywhere in that room and I've got the governor doubling his fist and acting like he wants to punch me.
REPORTER: What exactly did he say?
JACOBS: I wish I'd have tape recorded it so I could play it for you. Just know this: It's not so much what he said, it's how he said it, the setting that he said it in, it was intimidating. And if any citizen of Illinois was ever treated in that manner ... I can see why he can't get what he wants, because you can't get what you want when you sit around and pout. You have to be a grown up and try to find compromise. He acted like a spoiled child who was not willing to compromise on anything. So if the governor of Illinois wants open warfare with me, if that's his goal, come have it son, come have it. And I'm just a normal person, I don't have any special thing, but I'll be darned if I'll let anyone run over me, it's not going to happen. These people know I'm not a high-minded guy, so I'm not trying to take some high ground, I'm just letting the governor know that if he wants to play this game, I'll play it with him.
REPORTER: Senator, would you seriously consider running against the governor?
JACOBS: Absolutely. Absolutely. This governor of Illinois has done a terrible job. I don't have any ambition to be governor of Illinois, but I do have ambition to help my community, help my state grow. We're going the wrong way. If the governor of Illinois is going to say, 'Look, Senator Jacobs, I'm running people against you because you won't do exactly what I say' well, then I'm going to run against him because he won't do what I say. You guys all work with this guy, you guys all work with him. You know what kind of person he is. He's untrustworthy, a man you can't believe. You know, if he wants a fight, I'll fight.

Com Ed has a severe shortage and wants Dawson to train candidates so they can have a pool to draw from. One must apply to get into the education program at Dawson.

I am sure you heard about the Tim Hardaway controversey, what is going on? First the guy from Grey's Anatomy and now Tim Hardaway. Especially within the rubric of political coalitions Blacks and Homosexuals have an alliance. I am proud to say that alliance is usually manifested within the Democratic Party. Homosexuals often draw comparisons between their struggle and the African-American struggle for Civil Rights. While there are many divergent views on that subject I hope the latest episodes do not harm that delicate fabric that produces great leaders like Rep. Barney Frank and Sen. Barack Obama.

However, here is the quesiton. It is well known that the Black church by most accounts is a conservative institution. Do you think religous dogma makes African-Americans uncomfortable with homosexuality?

Remembering James Brown

As we all know the Godfather of Soul James Brown died yesterday. I am very sad! I like James Brown, I like James Brown alot. I own a 4 CD James Brown anthology, I absolutely love the James Brown performance in the Blues Brothers and yes, I saw James Brown in concert. James Brown was getting older and I knew if I didn't see him back in 2002 I'd probably never see him.

I saw the show with my partner in bourgeoisie living, Andre Watkins. It was a great experience.

There was so much demand for this event I plan to do it again in March. The day that interest me most is Tuesday, March 20 when the Bulls play the L.A. Clippers. If you are interested in buying tickets or being an event co-sponsor which means you'll purchase a minimum of 5 tickets please let me know ASAP. Even though the event is three (3) months from now I will purchase the tickets soon.

The Young Democrats of Cook County will be staffing a concession stand for all the Chicago Bears Home Games this season!!! In exchange, we will be raising money for our organization. This money will be used to purchase Christmas toys for the disadvantaged in December, assist with the purchasing of tools for our Rebuilding Together Metro Chicago project and many other upcoming community service activities YDCC plans to participate in as well as other scheduled activities during the year. We are looking for volunteers to help staff the concession stand on Sundays throughout the season. We are not asking that you commit to work every game but if you could help out with at least one game, it would be appreciated! Todd Stroger is more than qualified and his advancement bodes well for the South Side, people of color and young people. Soon I will post his accomplishments and resume.

What did I do over my Spring Break? I got educated. I visited the Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum and I encourage all of my friends to do the same.

The feature exhibit is "The African Presence in Mexico", From Yanga to the Present. I never knew there was an African presence in Mexico. This is untrue. Similar to Puerto Rico some slave ship landed in Mexico and shortly thereafter a new people came forth. I'll provide you with some teasers...

* The song Llabamba made famous by Richie Valens is an African-Mexican folk song.

** The resort city of Aculpoco is next to a state within Mexico that has a large population of African-Mexicans. Most people assume these people are dark because of exposure to the sun, UNTRUE.

Downstate YD's are participating in this election cycle in full force. Ty Bates of County is campaigning to be a member of the Marion County Board. As a member of the County Board Ty will help establish a budget and oversee county government. This is an awesome responsibility and Ty Bates is an awesome candidate. He is bright, educated and a hard-worker. He is a correctional officer and wants to do much to stop young people from entering prison system. Also, he is a family man, he and his wife, Carrie are the proud parents of a beautiful little girl. (Like a good Democrat he named his daughter Kennedy).

Dad sues to block son's circumcision

An Arlington Heights father will appear in court today to fight what he says is a plan to "mutilate" his 8-year-old son by circumcising him.
The boy's mother argues that without circumcision his recurring infections will only get worse.

The divorced couple is embroiled in a bitter fight that will see national experts flying in to testify before a Cook County judge. Their battle reflects a national debate on circumcision -- a procedure that has dropped in popularity in the United States over the last 25 years.

The United States continues to lead the world in circumcisions; 1.12 million American baby boys were circumcised in 2003.

Much of that is attributed to cultural and social norms. But in the last 10 years, the percentage of boys circumcised has been dropping and is at its lowest since at least the 1970s. In 2003, 55.9 percent of male babies were circumcised -- down from a high of 64.7 percent in 1980, the National Center for Health Statistics says.
Part of that is attributed to economics, because some insurance policies don't pay for circumcisions -- especially since the American Academy of Pediatrics said the benefits of circumcision are not significant enough to label it as medically necessary.

Studies have cited a decreased risk of infections, injuries and penile cancer in those who are circumcised. But studies also have shown that circumcised babies have a risk for infection and injury by abrasion to the sensitive skin.

"My child is healthy and he doesn't want this to happen to him," the father said. "He's completely comfortable. I don't see any reason to do it."
But the boy's mother, who lives in Northbrook, said several doctors have told her that without circumcision earlier infections are likely to continue returning.
"Curing the infection isn't the issue -- it's stopping it from coming back. And the doctors have said the way to do that is by circumcision," said her attorney, Tracy Rizzo. "But now, [the father] has made this more of a political issue and nothing to do with medicine."
The couple -- he's a Polish native, she's Slovak -- married in 1996 and divorced in 2000.
The divorce decree gives the father input on major medical decisions. In February, a judge was asked to intervene and a restraining order was granted, preventing the mother from having the boy circumcised until after today's hearing.
Dr. Antonio Chaviano of Children's Memorial Hospital said fewer U.S. boys are being circumcised at birth, but it's even more rare to see the procedure done on an older boy.
Chaviano was not familiar with the 8-year-old's case, but acknowledged that sometimes circumcision is medically necessary for older boys. But he saw no reason for a boy to undergo the procedure if it wasn't needed. "You're opening a real Pandora's box," he said.
Those on both sides of the issue cite studies showing risks for infections and injuries. In a 1999 study, the American Academy of Pediatrics found no overwhelming evidence to support or oppose circumcision.
Attorneys for the father, Alan Toback and John D'Arco, are working with Georgia attorney David Llewellyn, whose expertise is circumcision cases. "Given [the boy's] age and the absolute lack of any medical necessity, any benefit to the child ... is far outweighed by the detriments," Toback said.
But Rizzo, attorney for the boy's mother, says medicine and proper cleaning instructions have not helped her son -- and the mother insists circumcision is needed.

Rizzo says the father repeatedly misses child-support payments and is opposed to his ex-wife's new marriage -- a claim the father denies.
"She just cares about her child," Rizzo said, "and wants to give him the best medical care necessary."

Albinos condemn 'Da Vinci' assassin

The notion of Christ as a family man is not the only raw nerve "The Da Vinci Code" has touched. Albinos are bothered that one of their own has yet again been depicted as a villain.
Dan Brown's best seller begins its worldwide debut Wednesday with Tom Hanks as the cryptologist pursuing a 2,000-year-old mystery that could reveal Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married and that the Vatican covered it up.
Among his co-stars is Paul Bettany, the British actor playing monk-assassin Silas, an albino with red eyes who carries out a series of bloody murders to secure the secret of the Holy Grail, a trove of lost Christian documents that could prove Jesus had wed.
Critics cite a long list of albinos cast as heavies by Hollywood: The dreadlocked twins in "The Matrix Reloaded," a powder-haired hit man in the Chevy Chase-Goldie Hawn crime romp "Foul Play," the pasty zombies in "The Omega Man," a sadistic killer in "Cold Mountain," even the wicked executioner in the fairy-tale comedy "The Princess Bride."
Michael McGowan, an albino who heads the National Organization for Albinism and Hypopigmentation, said "The Da Vinci Code" will be the 68th movie since 1960 to feature an evil albino.
"Silas is just the latest in a long string," McGowan said. "The problem is there has been no balance. There are no realistic, sympathetic or heroic characters with albinism that you can find in movies or popular culture."
People with albinism have little or no pigmentation in their skin, eyes and hair.
McGowan said his group asked "Da Vinci Code" director Ron Howard's production outfit, Imagine Entertainment, not to bleach Silas' hair or make his eyes red, but "that fell on deaf ears."
When offered the role, Bettany initially thought mainly of the makeup challenge, saying past attempts to lighten non-albino actors' pigmentation had not looked realistic.
Bettany said he looked at Silas not as an evil albino but as a man damaged by his harsh upbringing. In the book, Silas was an abused child who wound up on the streets, was scorned as an outcast, turned to violence and landed in prison.
"I thought, this man's a psychopath, and he's not a psychopath because he's an albino," Bettany said. "He's an amalgamation of everything that sort of happened to him in his life. How his father treated him and the things he saw his father do to his mother, and he happens to be preternaturally gifted at hurting people. ...
"I think it's no more a comment on albinos than it is on monks, and no more a comment on monks than it is on people who wear sandals," Bettany said.
Many readers found Silas a tragic character despite his misdeeds, viewing him more as a lost sheep than a villain.
McGowan said his group plans no boycotts or picketing. Instead, the group aims to use the movie's popularity to raise awareness about the realities of albinism. He said he enjoyed most of the book and plans to see the movie.
"We understand that millions read it and when they go to the movie, they're going to want to see the albino monk-assassin," McGowan said. "It's the cumulative effect of having one evil albino character after another that was disturbing to me."

For instance, a real estate broker tells a white family "darkies are coming" and the white family sells slightly lower than the market rate in order to avoid the impending bottoming of the housing market because minorities are coming. However, the real estate broker now sells to a minority family but at a higher than normal rate making claims that the neighborhood is integrating and the high price is the surcharge one pays to move in an integrated neighborhood.

The real estate agent is performing market arbitrage and keeps all profits. Needless to say such actions are now illegal 42 USC Sec. 3604(e).

Election time at the law school

The Black Law Student Association (BLSA) will host elections soon. The nomination process is complicated. Anyone may be nominated for any position. The nomination must be seconded and the nomination must be accepted by the nominee. Thus far, I have been nominated and seconded for the position of president and vice-president.

I think I will accept the post of vice-president. There was another gentleman nominated. I wish him well.

The post of VP is very encompassing. The VP runs the general body meeting and plans the BLSA banquet. I think I have the skills to do both. I have run many YD meetings and planned numerous events, I think the position is a good compliment for me.

Light hearted

A Minneapolis couple decided to go to Florida to thaw
out during a particularly icy winter. They planned to
stay at the same hotel where they spent their
honeymoon 20 years earlier. Because of hectic
schedules,it was difficult to coordinate their travel schedules.
So, the husband left Minnesota and flew to Florida on
Thursday, with his wife flying down the following day.
The husband checked into the hotel. There was a
omputer in his room, so he decided to send an email to
his wife. However, he accidentally left out one
letter in her email address, and without realizing his
error, sent the email. Meanwhile, somewhere in
Houston, a widow had just returned home from her
husband's funeral. He was a minister who was called
home to glory following a heart attack.
The widow decided to check her email expecting
messages from relatives and friends. After reading the
first message, she screamed and fainted. The
widow's son rushed into the room, found his mother on
the floor, and saw the computer screen which read:

To: My Loving Wife
Subject: I've Arrived
Date: October 16, 2004
I know you're surprised to hear from me. They have
computers here now and you are allowed to send emails
to your loved ones. I've just arrived and have been
checked in. I see that everything has been prepared
for your arrival tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing
you then! Hope your journey is as uneventful as mine
was.

'Marriage Is for White People'

I grew up in a time when two-parent families were still the norm, in both black and white America. Then, as an adult, I saw divorce become more commonplace, then almost a rite of passage. Today it would appear that many -- particularly in the black community -- have dispensed with marriage altogether.

But as a black woman, I have witnessed the outrage of girlfriends when the ex failed to show up for his weekend with the kids, and I've seen the disappointment of children who missed having a dad around. Having enjoyed a close relationship with my own father, I made a conscious decision that I wanted a husband, not a live-in boyfriend and not a "baby's daddy," when it came my time to mate and marry.

My time never came.

For years, I wondered why not. And then some 12-year-olds enlightened me. "Marriage is for white people."

That's what one of my students told me some years back when I taught a career exploration class for sixth-graders at an elementary school in Southeast Washington. I was pleasantly surprised when the boys in the class stated that being a good father was a very important goal to them, more meaningful than making money or having a fancy title.
"That's wonderful!" I told my class. "I think I'll invite some couples in to talk about being married and rearing children."
"Oh, no," objected one student. "We're not interested in the part about marriage. Only about how to be good fathers."
And that's when the other boy chimed in, speaking as if the words left a nasty taste in his mouth: "Marriage is for white people."
He's right. At least statistically. The marriage rate for African Americans has been dropping since the 1960s, and today, we have the lowest marriage rate of any racial group in the United States. In 2001, according to the U.S. Census, 43.3 percent of black men and 41.9 percent of black women in America had never been married, in contrast to 27.4 percent and 20.7 percent respectively for whites. African American women are the least likely in our society to marry. In the period between 1970 and 2001, the overall marriage rate in the United States declined by 17 percent; but for blacks, it fell by 34 percent. Such statistics have caused Howard University relationship therapist Audrey Chapman to point out that African Americans are the most uncoupled people in the country.

How have we gotten here? What has shifted in African American customs, in our community, in our consciousness, that has made marriage seem unnecessary or unattainable? Although slavery was an atrocious social system, men and women back then nonetheless often succeeded in establishing working families. In his account of slave life and culture, "Roll, Jordan, Roll," historian Eugene D. Genovese wrote: "A slave in Georgia prevailed on his master to sell him to Jamaica so that he could find his wife, despite warnings that his chances of finding her on so large an island were remote. . . . Another slave in Virginia chopped his left hand off with a hatchet to prevent being sold away from his son." I was stunned to learn that a black child was more likely to grow up living with both parents during slavery days than he or she is today, according to sociologist Andrew J. Cherlin.

Traditional notions of family, especially the extended family network, endure. But working mothers, unmarried couples living together, out-of-wedlock births, birth control, divorce and remarriage have transformed the social landscape. And no one seems to feel this more than African American women. One told me that with today's changing mores, it's hard to know "what normal looks like" when it comes to courtship, marriage and parenthood. Sex, love and childbearing have become a la carte choices rather than a package deal that comes with marriage. Moreover, in an era of brothers on the "down low," the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and the decline of the stable blue-collar jobs that black men used to hold, linking one's fate to a man makes marriage a risky business for a black woman.

"A woman who takes that step is bold and brave," one young single mother told me. "Women don't want to marry because they don't want to lose their freedom." Among African Americans, the desire for marriage seems to have a different trajectory for women and men. My observation is that black women in their twenties and early thirties want to marry and commit at a time when black men their age are more likely to enjoy playing the field. As the woman realizes that a good marriage may not be as possible or sustainable as she would like, her focus turns to having a baby, or possibly improving her job status, perhaps by returning to school or investing more energy in her career.

As men mature, and begin to recognize the benefits of having a roost and roots (and to feel the consequences of their risky bachelor behavior), they are more willing to marry and settle down. By this time, however, many of their female peers are satisfied with the lives they have constructed and are less likely to settle for marriage to a man who doesn't bring much to the table. Indeed, he may bring too much to the table: children and their mothers from previous relationships, limited earning power, and the fallout from years of drug use, poor health care, sexual promiscuity. In other words, for the circumspect black woman, marriage may not be a business deal that offers sufficient return on investment.
In the past, marriage was primarily just such a business deal. Among wealthy families, it solidified political alliances or expanded land holdings. For poorer people, it was a means of managing the farm or operating a household. Today, people have become economically self-sufficient as individuals, no longer requiring a spouse for survival. African American women have always had a high rate of labor-force participation. "Why should well-salaried women marry?" asked black feminist and author Alice Dunbar-Nelson as early as 1895. But now instead of access only to low-paying jobs, we can earn a breadwinner's wage, which has changed what we want in a husband. "Women's expectations have changed dramatically while men's have not changed much at all," said one well-paid working wife and mother. "Women now say, 'Providing is not enough. I need more partnership.' "

The turning point in my own thinking about marriage came when a longtime friend proposed about five years ago. He and I had attended college together, dated briefly, then kept in touch through the years. We built a solid friendship, which I believe is a good foundation for a successful marriage. But -- if we had married, I would have had to relocate to the Midwest. Been there, done that, didn't like it. I would have had to become a stepmother and, although I felt an easy camaraderie with his son, stepmotherhood is usually a bumpy ride. I wanted a house and couldn't afford one alone. But I knew that if I was willing to make some changes, I eventually could.

As I reviewed the situation, I realized that all the things I expected marriage to confer -- male companionship, close family ties, a house -- I already had, or were within reach, and with exponentially less drama. I can do bad by myself, I used to say as I exited a relationship. But the truth is, I can do pretty good by myself, too. Most single black women over the age of 30 whom I know would not mind getting married, but acknowledge that the kind of man and the quality of marriage they would like to have may not be likely, and they are not desperate enough to simply accept any situation just to have a man. A number of my married friends complain that taking care of their husbands feels like having an additional child to raise. Then there's the fact that marriage apparently can be hazardous to the health of black women. A recent study by the Institute for American Values, a nonpartisan think tank in New York City, indicates that married African American women are less healthy than their single sisters.
By design or by default, black women cultivate those skills that allow them to maintain themselves (or sometimes even to prosper) without a mate.
"If Jesus Christ bought me an engagement ring, I wouldn't take it," a separated thirty-something friend told me. "I'd tell Jesus we could date, but we couldn't marry." And here's the new twist. African American women aren't the only ones deciding that they can make do alone. Often what happens in black America is a sign of what the rest of America can eventually expect. In his 2003 book, "Mismatch: The Growing Gulf between Women and Men," Andrew Hacker noted that the structure of white families is evolving in the direction of that of black families of the 1960s. In 1960, 67 percent of black families were headed by a husband and wife, compared to 90.9 percent for whites. By 2000, the figure for white families had dropped to 79.8 percent. Births to unwed white mothers were 22.5 percent in 2001, compared to 2.3 percent in 1960. So my student who thought marriage is for white people may have to rethink that in the future.
Still, does this mean that marriage is going the way of the phonograph and the typewriter ribbon?

"I hope it isn't," said one friend who's been married for seven years. "The divorce rate is 50 percent, but people remarry. People want to be married. I don't think it's going out of style."
A black male acquaintance had a different prediction. "I don't believe marriage is going to be extinct, but I think you'll see fewer people married," he said. "It's a bad thing. I believe it takes the traditional family -- a man and a woman -- to raise kids." He has worked with troubled adolescents, and has observed that "the girls who are in the most trouble and who are abused the most -- the father is absent. And the same is true for the boys, too." He believes that his presence and example in the home is why both his sons decided to marry when their girlfriends became pregnant.
But human nature being what it is, if marriage is to flourish -- in black or white America -- it will have to offer an individual woman something more than a business alliance, a panacea for what ails the community, or an incubator for rearing children. As one woman said, "If it weren't for the intangibles, the allure of the lovey-dovey stuff, I wouldn't have gotten married. The benefits of marriage are his character and his caring. If not for that, why bother?"

Is Rev. Sen. James Meeks the next Malcolm X? The slain civil rights leader is quoted as saying the title line. Rev. Sen. James Meeks is openly flirting with running for Governor. Why?

Well Rev. Sen. Meeks wants more school funding. He said he will cast aside his campaing if the Governor can show him 4 Billion dollars for school funding. That is bad news for the Hot Rod. While Meeks will never win he will pull enough votes from the Governor. Don't forget Judy Barr Topinka is not a stranger to the Southside of Chicago. One of her senior staffers is the wife of Congressman Bobby Rush. Four years ago Congressman Rush endorsed Topinka for Treasurer over the Democratic nominee. Who knows what will happen this time. So with Rush and Topoinka taking votes to the right and Rev. Sen. Meeks taking votes to the left the Hot Rod is not left with much of a Black base!

While I feel Rev. Sen. Meeks is doing a noble thing I do not believe in splitting the vote and one should remain a good Democrat. Uh oh, Meeks is not a Democrat! So, he has no allegiance to the Governor or the party, that's even worse for the Hot Rod. Meeks needs 25,000 signatures to be on the November ballot. Through an alliance of mega-churches that will not be a hard feat. So, do I endorse the Meeks move no, but to paraphrase Chris Rock, he shouldn't do it, but I understand!

The National Center for Men has prepared a lawsuit -- nicknamed Roe v. Wade for Men -- to be filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Michigan on behalf of a 25-year-old computer programmer ordered to pay child support for his ex-girlfriend's daughter. The suit addresses the issue of male reproductive rights, contending that lack of such rights violates the U.S. Constitution's equal protection clause.
The gist of the argument: If a pregnant woman can choose among abortion, adoption or raising a child, a man involved in an unintended pregnancy should have the choice of declining the financial responsibilities of fatherhood. The activists involved hope to spark discussion even if they lose.
"There's such a spectrum of choice that women have it's her body, her pregnancy and she has the ultimate right to make decisions," said Mel Feit, director of the men's center. "I'm trying to find a way for a man also to have some say over decisions that affect his life profoundly."
Feit's organization has been trying since the early 1990s to pursue such a lawsuit, and finally found a suitable plaintiff in Matt Dubay of Saginaw, Mich.
Dubay says he has been ordered to pay $500 a month in child support for a girl born last year to his ex-girlfriend. He contends that the woman knew he didn't want to have a child with her and assured him repeatedly that because of a physical condition she could not get pregnant.
Dubay is braced for the lawsuit to fail.
"What I expect to hear (from the court) is that the way things are is not really fair, but that's the way it is," he said in a telephone interview. "Just to create awareness would be enough, to at least get a debate started."
State courts have ruled in the past that any inequity experienced by men like Dubay is outweighed by society's interest in ensuring that children get financial support from two parents. Melanie Jacobs, a Michigan State University law professor, said the federal court might rule similarly in Dubay's case.
"The courts are trying to say it may not be so fair that this gentleman has to support a child he didn't want, but it's less fair to say society has to pay the support," she said.
Feit, however, says a fatherhood opt-out wouldn't necessarily impose higher costs on society or the mother. A woman who balked at abortion but felt she couldn't afford to raise a child could put the baby up for adoption, he said.
Jennifer Brown of the women's rights advocacy group Legal Momentum objected to the men's center comparing Dubay's lawsuit to Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court ruling establishing a woman's right to have an abortion.
"Roe is based on an extreme intrusion by the government literally to force a woman to continue a pregnancy she doesn't want," Brown said. "There's nothing equivalent for men. They have the same ability as women to use contraception, to get sterilized."
Feit counters that the suit's reference to abortion rights is apt.
"Roe says a woman can choose to have intimacy and still have control over subsequent consequences," he said. "No one has ever asked a federal court if that means men should have some similar say."
"The problem is this is so politically incorrect," Feit added. "The public is still dealing with the pre-Roe ethic when it comes to men, that if a man fathers a child, he should accept responsibility."
Feit doesn't advocate an unlimited fatherhood opt-out; he proposes a brief period in which a man, after learning of an unintended pregnancy, could decline parental responsibilities if the relationship was one in which neither partner had desired a child.
"If the woman changes her mind and wants the child, she should be responsible," Feit said. "If she can't take care of the child, adoption is a good alternative."
The president of the National Organization for Women, Kim Gandy, acknowledged that disputes over unintended pregnancies can be complex and bitter.
"None of these are easy questions," said Gandy, a former prosecutor. "But most courts say it's not about what he did or didn't do or what she did or didn't do. It's about the rights of the child."

Soon I will detail the events of election night. To say the least it was a wild night. I was up for 28+ hours. I think that is a personal record. However, as a professional politico this is my life. So when do I conduct a personal life? Most people will say never, however, others have so I guess I will fit a personal life with my other activities (law school, campaigining and Young Democrats of America).

I have met or reacquainted myself with a former undergrad classmate and DePaul Law School graduate. The two of us have spent a considerable amount of time together recently. She is a high-paced attorney in the state's capital, who knows why she likes hanging out with me but I am riding this bike until the wheels fall off! So wish me well or better yet wish her well.

When you protect your vote you protect your community. It may sound cliche but voting is power! When you protect your vote you ensure your voice is heard and your community is governed the way you choose.

How do you protect your vote?

First and foremost report any voter irregularities to the authorities: Chicago Police Department, FBI, Cook County States Attorney, United States Attorney or any law enforcement or prosecutorial agency.

Second, you can show up TODAY at Stroger headquarters and be trained on how to monitor Board of Elections officials as they manually count the vote at 69 W. Washington. I will post blog entries on my interesting night at the polls but it was not interesting to see that the 1st and 2nd Congressional Districts were only reporting 20-25% of the precints as late as 11 pm and the other Congressional districts were well above 40%. Oh, by the way the 1st and 2nd Congressional Districts are the black districts and mostly lay on the South Side and South suburbs!

So call the 8th Ward Regular Democratic Organization and volunteer to monitor the manual count tomorrow.

This weekend I attended the Latino/a Law School Association Banquet. Why did I attend? Is it because I have a love for Cubano jazz? Is it because taco night at the Anderson household is a special day? Is it because I have a crush on Jennifer Lopez?

While all of the above are true, the real reason I went is to be supportive of my Latino Brothers and Latina Sisters. The event was very nice. In addition to having a keynote speaker LLSA presented a distinguished alum award. For an annual event that is only in its sixth year LLSA appears to be well on it's way.

He is not Dr. Martin Luther King, he is not Malcolm X. However, Gordon Parks is an important figure in African American history. He recently passed on. I challenge you to research him and learn of his achievements. Remember, Black History is 365!

NEW YORK (AP) -- Gordon Parks, who captured the struggles and triumphs of black America as a photographer for Life magazine and then became Hollywood's first major black director with "The Learning Tree" and the hit "Shaft," died Tuesday, a family member said. He was 93.
Parks, who also wrote fiction and was an accomplished composer, died in New York, his nephew, Charles Parks, said in a telephone interview from Lawrence, Kansas.
"Nothing came easy," Parks wrote in his autobiography. "I was just born with a need to explore every tool shop of my mind, and with long searching and hard work. I became devoted to my restlessness." (Watch Parks describe how his powerful work could be a lesson for all -- 1:49)
He covered everything from fashion to politics to sports during his 20 years at Life, from 1948 to 1968.
But as a photographer, he was perhaps best known for his gritty photo essays on the grinding effects of poverty in the United States and abroad and on the spirit of the civil rights movement.
"Those special problems spawned by poverty and crime touched me more, and I dug into them with more enthusiasm," he said. "Working at them again revealed the superiority of the camera to explore the dilemmas they posed."
In 1961, his photographs in Life of a poor, ailing Brazilian boy named Flavio da Silva brought donations that saved the boy and purchased a new home for him and his family.
"The Learning Tree" was Parks' first film, in 1969. It was based on his 1963 autobiographical novel of the same name, in which the young hero grapples with fear and racism as well as first love and schoolboy triumphs. Parks wrote the score as well as directed.
In 1989, "The Learning Tree" was among the first 25 American movies to be placed on the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress. The registry is intended to highlight films of particular cultural, historical or aesthetic importance.
The detective drama "Shaft," which came out in 1971 and starred Richard Roundtree, was a major hit and spawned a series of black-oriented films. Parks himself directed a sequel, "Shaft's Big Score," in 1972, and that same year his son Gordon Jr. directed "Superfly." The younger Parks was killed in a plane crash in 1979.
Parks also published books of poetry and wrote musical compositions including "Martin," a ballet about the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
Parks was born November 30, 1912, in Fort Scott, Kansas, the youngest of 15 children. In his 1990 autobiography, "Voices in the Mirror," he remembered it as a world of racism and poverty, but also a world where his parents gave their children love, discipline and religious faith.
He went through a series of jobs as a teen and young man, including piano player and railroad dining car waiter. The breakthrough came when he was about 25, when he bought a used camera in a pawn shop for $7.50. He became a freelance fashion photographer, went on to Vogue magazine and then to Life in 1948.
"Reflecting now, I realize that, even within the limits of my childhood vision, I was on a search for pride, meanwhile taking measurable glimpses of how certain blacks, who were fed up with racism, rebelled against it," he wrote.
When he accepted an award from Wichita State University in May 1991, he said it was "another step forward in my making peace with Kansas and Kansas making peace with me."
"I dream terrible dreams, terribly violent dreams," he said. "The doctors say it's because I suppressed so much anger and hatred from my youth. I bottled it up and used it constructively."
In his autobiography, he recalled that being Life's only black photographer put him in a peculiar position when he set out to cover the civil rights movement.
"Life magazine was eager to penetrate their ranks for stories, but the black movement thought of Life as just another white establishment out of tune with their cause," he wrote. He said his aim was to become "an objective reporter, but one with a subjective heart."
The story of young Flavio prompted Life readers to send in $30,000, enabling his family to build a home, and Flavio received treatment for his asthma in an American clinic. By the 1970s, he had a family and a job as a security guard, but more recently the home built in 1961 has become overcrowded and run-down.
Still, Flavio stayed in touch with Parks off and on, and in 1997 Parks said, "If I saw him tomorrow in the same conditions, I would do the whole thing over again."
In addition to novels, poetry and his autobiographical writings, Parks' writing credits included nonfiction such as "Camera Portraits: Techniques and Principles of Documentary Portraiture," 1948, and a 1971 book of essays called "Born Black."
His other film credits included "The Super Cops," 1974; "Leadbelly," 1976; and "Solomon Northup's Odyssey," a TV film from 1984.
Recalling the making of "The Learning Tree," he wrote: "A lot of people of all colors were anxious about the breakthrough, and I was anxious to make the most of it. The wait had been far too long. Just remembering that no black had been given a chance to direct a motion picture in Hollywood since it was established kept me going."
Last month, health concerns had kept Parks from accepting the William Allen White Foundation National Citation in Kansas, but he said in a taped presentation that he still considered the state his home and wanted to be buried in Fort Scott.
Two years ago, Fort Scott Community College established the Gordon Parks Center for Culture and Diversity.
Jill Warford, its executive director, said Tuesday that Parks "had a very rough start in life and he overcame so much, but was such a good person and kind person that he never let the bad things that happened to him make him bitter."

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Dana Reeve, the widow of the late actor Christopher Reeve, has died of lung cancer at age 44, according to the Christopher Reeve Foundation.
A lifelong nonsmoker, Dana Reeve revealed she had the disease in August, less than a year after her husband's death. She died Monday night.
"We are all just so sad," foundation President Kathy Lewis said.
Lewis said that she had visited Reeve on Friday and that she was "strong and gracious and courageous." (Watch how Dana Reeve's work inspired admiration -- 1:52)
Reeve was the chairwoman of the foundation, which funds research for new treatments for spinal cord injuries and works to improve the quality of life for people suffering from paralysis.
Her husband died in October 2004 at age 52 after falling into a coma. He had been paralyzed since a horseback riding accident in 1995.
Reeve was admired for the support and love she showed for her husband and for her assistance in his care.
She also was an actress and singer.
In January, she sang at the retirement ceremony for Mark Messier's New York Rangers jersey at Madison Square Garden.
"She sang beautifully. She looked lovely," said Kathie Lee Gifford, who interviewed Reeve at the event. "She was wearing a wig, of course. She had been through chemo and radiation. She was very thin, which you would expect for somebody going through what she was going through."
Gifford said she was surprised by the news because Reeve had seemed so healthy that night. (Watch how nonsmoking women face a lung cancer risk -- 3:34)
"I was absolutely stunned because she told me that day that the tumor was shrinking and she was the picture of optimism that night," Gifford said.
Kate Michelman, a member of the foundation's board, remembered Reeve as "a great spirit."
"The country suffers because Dana, on a personal level, was one of the most remarkable people I've ever known," Michelman said.
She said Reeve's health had seemed to improve, giving friends and loved ones hope that she might recover from the cancer.
"She was improving. You know her own spirit and her own determination to overcome this plague made us feel she could do it," Michelman said.
"She just recently learned that she was failing and right up [till] the end, I have to tell you, Dana was convinced she was going to overcome this."
Michelman said Reeve's death is "a dreadful loss" but that the foundation will "move forward with Christopher and Dana's vision."
Dana and Christopher Reeve married in 1992 after a five-year relationship.
The actor was famous for his role as Superman in a trilogy of movies in the late 1970s and 1980s. He continued to act and direct films after his accident.
Christopher Reeve became a crusader to help find therapies and treatments for paralysis and was an outspoken supporter of stem-cell research. Dana Reeve was credited with carrying on his work through the foundation.
"After Christopher's death, Dana was determined to preserve the important work and the legacy of hope that became his life's mission," Lewis said in a statement. "Even in our grief, the foundation must pick up and continue to go forward with this mission.
"At the same time, we commit ourselves to ensuring that the light of grace, courage and hopefulness that Dana embodied continues to shine bright -- bringing comfort and hope to people living with paralysis and their families and caregivers."
She is survived by the couple's son, Will, 13; her father; two sisters; and two stepchildren, according to the foundation's statement.

Chicago's Morgan Park High was buzzing Tuesday with news that the school posted world-class Advanced Placement results.
More African-American kids at Morgan Park passed their AP exams in two courses -- English language/composition and European history -- than at any other high school in the nation offering AP courses last year, AP officials said.

The number of Morgan Park students required to achieve that feat was 32 in English language and 26 in European history.
That may not sound like much, but those numbers translate roughly into 1-1/2 classrooms full of kids, all of them testing at college-level standards, and all of them African American -- the racial group most under-represented in AP classrooms across the nation, state and city. Two sections of each course were offered last year at Morgan Park, where the student body is 93 percent African-American.

"I think it's awesome. It's kind of bittersweet," said AP English language teacher Marilyn Jackson, herself a Morgan Park grad. "You are excited that we have the most number of African-American students to succeed, but at the same time, that's just 32. You want more than that to succeed, not just at our school, but at every school."

Wide variety of texts
Jackson said AP English language can be challenging for kids weaned on rap music. "Students do not have many role models who use language well," she said. "They are very much into rap and movies that don't necessarily use standard English."

Morgan Park was among six Chicago area schools honored Tuesday for top AP results among 31 countries and more than 15,000 high schools across the globe -- including more than 800 schools outside the continental United States -- to offer AP courses last year. It was the only Chicago neighborhood school to be so honored.

As research mounts on the link between AP classes and college success, new data from the College Board Tuesday indicated AP courses are becoming more common nationally, in Illinois and in Chicago.
The data also showed that 73 percent of Illinois tests reflected a score of 3 or better -- scores that usually earn the student college credit. Nationally, 59.7 percent of the tests hit that mark.

However, fewer Illinois graduates took at least one AP course during their high school career than high school grads nationally -- 9.8 percent versus 22.7 percent.

In Chicago, where many high schools still offer no AP courses, City Schools CEO Arne Duncan called it "very encouraging" that Chicago's AP numbers are growing at a faster clip than the state's and the nation's. Officials attributed the boost to expanded AP teacher training and programs such as one aimed at getting kids with average GPAs primed for AP classes.
Why was Morgan Park so successful? In English language, students cited lots of writing assignments -- many of them timed, just like on AP tests; heavy but innovative vocabulary work; and an emphasis on analyzing a wide variety of texts, from the classic Shakespeare and the letters of Lord Chesterfield to the more contemporary Amy Chan and Richard Rodriguez. To prove they understood The Merchant of Venice this week, Jackson's students had to translate it into a series of articles for a newspaper they're calling The Bill Shakes Times.

'Kind of a cool thing'

Of all races, blacks are most under-represented in AP classrooms, often because they haven't received enough preparation for such classes, said AP executive director Trevor Packer.

But at Morgan Park, since 2003, teachers have been meeting weekly across grades to discuss what kids need to be primed for AP. At this point, AP courses are part of the culture of the school, said AP English language student Willie Valentine, who is also on the football, baseball and bowling team.

"It's gone into a kind of cool thing," said Valentine, a senior. "It's not nerdy. It's accepted today. If you can hang out at the AP class, it shows how intelligent you are."

There comes a time in a politicians life where he/she know longer seeks media attention. Why? Because most stories will be negative stories. I am not at that point in life yet!

My school newspaper, the Daily Illini wrote a piece about me yesterday. Most say the story was complimentary. I encourage you to read it and get back to me.

One note, I am not the heir apparent to State Rep. Marlow Colvin. I told the reporter I'd hope to be considered as a successor once the Representative moves on to greener pastures. So I want to clarify any confusion.

Also, thank you to Tracy Culumber who authored the story. She worked tirelessly and accepted my phone calls and mutliple e-mails. I am sure she will go on to be a great reporter with some large media conglomerate one day.

My friend, Frank Avila

On a personal note my friend Frank Avila is one of the coolest. He is who the guys want to have a beer with and he's exactly what the ladies objectify when speaking of a man in uniform.

Frank is a civic leader, attorney, Army Reservist and candidate for Metropolitan Water Reclaimation District Commissioner. This municipal agency is one of the most obscure but one of the most important. The MWRD is responsible for treatment of waste water for the entire Chicagoland area. To do this job effectively one must be well versed in environmental matters and aware of regulations. Frank knows both.

The District is composed of 9 commissioners. Each election year you may vote for 3 commissioners. One of my 3 votes will be for Frank Avila.

Over the next few weeks I will tell you all more about candidates I like and why I support them, I hope I am persuasive.

Monday Night Football will have a new broadcast team when it debuts on ESPN in 2006.

Mike Tirico, Joe Theismann and Tony Kornheiser will be part of a three-man booth calling the games on Monday nights next season and Suzy Kolber and Michelle Tafoya will be sideline reporters. Kolber and Tafoya both reported from the sidelines for ABC during Super Bowl XL.
"I'm just thrilled to be the next person to take the greatest franchise in television sports history forward," Tirico said on ESPN Radio Wednesday morning.

Also, ESPN announced that Mike Breen will be its new lead NBA play-by-play announcer, teaming with analyst Hubie Brown for ABC telecasts beginning Feb. 12 and including the NBA Finals.

"This Monday Night Football team enthusiastically embraces our vision for sports television's signature series. We will propel MNF into a 21st century, all-day, exclusive, multi-media event that will engage fans in entirely new ways. This team will develop great chemistry," ESPN Executive Vice President John Skipper said.

"Mike Breen is widely respected for his depth of NBA knowledge and his consummate play-by-play skill. We are very excited to provide such a spectacular forum as the NBA Finals to showcase his talents."
In addition, Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon will take Pardon The Interruption on the road on Mondays during the football season. The shows will air from the site of ESPN's Monday Night Football games.

"We look to the future with great enthusiasm and a strong commitment to enhance the presentation of the NFL and the NBA, two of our most important sports properties," ESPN and ABC Sports President George Bodenheimer said.

Al Michaels, the play-by-play voice of Monday Night Football on ABC from 1986 through Sunday's Super Bowl in Detroit, will not return to either broadcast.

I attended the College of Law's Alumni Conference Saturday. It was informative and I appreciate busy alums taking a day to spend with us. At the conclusion of the conference a survey form was distributed I completed mine and returned it.

For doing so my name was entered into a raffle. I WON! My prize is a DVD of the movie A Few Good Men. All of the movies had a lawerly theme. But wow, can you believe all the good things happening to me on one day!

A funny moment in law school.

If you know me you know I don't play the race card. I am candid about race and encourage those conversations. We live in a society that is sensitive to the subject. However, when something funny happens regarding race I feel it is my duty to share, read on.

This exhange was between me and one of the coolest Republicans I have met in law school. She has a good heart so I'll leave her nameless, I don't want to embaress her.

Republican: "Don't tell me to stay off the internet during class, if you are on the internet too!" (jokingly)

Me: "Naw there are different rules for you and I."

Republican: "That's like the pot calling the kettle..." and she pauses and becomes quiet.

I realize what is happening and I find it funny and she appears sheepish. She is cute as a button and she seemed uneasy so I let it go. She waved and retreated to the bathroom but I thought this whole exchange was hillarious.

This was a good way to start off my week!

Football. There are plenty of adjetives to describe this great sport. This Super Bowl is especially great for me. My Pittsburgh Steelers will play this year. Let's go Steelers.

However, when the Super Bowl concludes that means only one more game and football goes away for six (6) months. That makes me sad. Well I guess I have no excuse for going to church! ha ha ha.

As you know by now Friends of Kris Anderson had a birthday party in my honor. We made voter registration available at the party and it was a free event for all who attended. I was glad to have friends, family and colleagues there to help me celebrate. I'll let these people chime in. But I think it is fair to say those who did not attend missed a good time.

On the QT and the hush hush a southside rumors says that Alderman Todd Stroger is quietly making phone calls to line up support to be named Clerk when current Clerk Laski resigns. His father powerful ward boss John H. Stroger, Jr. is pressing too. This will help ensure his legacy if his offspring is a city leader.

While Todd is not boisterous in City Council meetings he is well like by many. He will be the consensus choice of the black caucus and may snatch away some non-minority southsiders (Murphy and Rugai) with large black populations. While the Mayor has the ultmiate power to appoint, numerous calls and a pledge of support for his own re-election (especially if there is a prominent Black in the race) may be enough to convince him.

We shall see.

This story is probably not true but I like the way it ends.

This took place on a BA (British Airways) flight between Johannesburg and London. A white woman, about 50 years old, was seated next to a black man. Obviously disturbed by this, she called the air Hostess. "Madam, what is the matter," the hostess asked. "You obviously do not see it then?" she responded. "You >placed me next to a black man. I do not agree to sit next to someone from such a repugnant group. Give me an alternative seat."Be calm please," the hostess replied. "Almost all the places on this flight are taken. I will go to see if another place is available." The Hostess went away and then came back a few minutes later. "Madam, just as I thought, there are no other available seats in the Economy class. I spoke to the captain and he informed me that there is also no seat in the business class. All the same, we still have one place in the first class." Before the woman could say anything, the hostess continued: "It is not usual for our company to permit someone from the economy class to sit in the first class. However, given the circumstances, the captain feels that it would be scandalous to make someone sit next to someone so disgusting."She turned to the black man, and said, "Therefore, Sir, if you would like to, please collect your hand luggage, a seat awaits you in first class." At that moment, the other passengers who were shocked by what they had just witnessed stood up and applauded.This is a true story. Typical Thanksgiving Day, Not!!

Well for starters I was a bum on Thanksgiving Thursday. I did not wake up until noon! It's all because of this damn law school, students of the world unite, protest and petition our professors for giving us smaller workloads! :-)

Well my first stop was the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center. This was a great day for many reasons. First and foremost my paternal grandfather was a patient of this hospital and I believe this is where he died the summer of 2004. My grandfather always supported my ROTC endeavors and spoke fondly of his military service. Second, I was present when the facility was renamed Jesse Brown. (I shall include a link for those who need more information about the great man, Jesse Brown, http://www.arlingtoncemetery.net/jesse-brown.htm.) My former employer could not attend the ceremony and I stood proxy for him. It was a great day, the speeches were magnificent and Sec. Brown's legacy was reverenced by all.

So, I go to the VA Hospital because Ms. Allmon, President, 49th Ward Young Democrats is hosting an event. During my 2 hours at the hospital we passed out treats to Vets and they really liked it! I met some wonderful men whose bodies are deteoriating but not their spirits. I loved the experience and vow to do it some more.

Once I got back home, dinner was still in progress! I got a high metabolism (as my photos shall show), I needs to eat! So dinner is served at 6:30 pm. I will include the full menu at the bottom.

After we (my immediate family and other members of my extended family) concluded dinner I was joined by two former classmates, Ms. J. Alexander and Ms. J. Poole, both may be seen on my website, they are the two young ladies over my left shoulder. I enjoyed their company, my mother inquired about Ms. L. Blue but she told me earlier in the week that she had duties with her family. That is understandable.

Also, my younger cousin Julie stopped by. Julie is the rock star of the family, she graces our presence for a few minutes each holiday. I found out my younger cousin is dating a professional football player who attended my great alma mater, he must be a fine young man! So, that was the project for the next twenty minutes to find out as much as possible about him via the web. My uncle, Julie's father approves of no man dating either of his daughters but this guy may be able to help him get a new roof for his home, so he may soften up to him.

The last highlight of the evening is actually something I am shamed of. If I were describing any other setting you'd think I was talking about a bunch of teenagers smoking weed but NO I am talking about my family. Everyone gathered around the TV and watched a DVD of Soul Train greatest moments, with....

Chinese subtitles! Who does that? And they were really into it! They were singing along with Little Michael and referring to how cool Don Cornelius' afro was, I was thoroughly embarressed.
